Debra has practiced as a licensed psychotherapist for over 25 years. Debra received her Baccalaureate from Mills College and Masters Degree from New York University. She was the Director of Mental Health services at an inpatient AIDs facility and an affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. There she developed a practice that integrates the physical and emotional aspects of mental health and physical illness. Debra spent several years in private practice where she pursued further training in alternative techniques like hypnotherapy and aromatherapy and has several years of experience supervising other therapists.
Debra’s philosophy of practice is to help people connect to what is important to them, so that they can make changes and are able to live into the future they envision for themselves. Debra treats the whole person and recognizes the impact of stress and illness on the body and mind no matter the severity. She is able to work with adults, adolescents, children and couples, utilizing individual, family and group therapy as well as various complementary modalities.
Debra has extensive experience working with the LGBTQIA community. She specializes in treating depression and anxiety disorders, trauma, grief & loss, life transitions such as divorce, death, launching off to college, career changes or retirement. She has been classically trained and practices traditional psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy while incorporating complementary techniques such as clinical hypnosis/hypnotherapy, art, music, aromatherapy and psycho-spiritual practices. Debra is trained to use hypnotherapy as a way to help people experience improvement in areas such as smoking cessation, lifestyle changes, stress reduction, and motivation to break old habits and learn new healthy ones.
Debra’s approach is to treat the mind, body and spirit as a whole while being interactive and fully engaged. This approach is often what creates the deepest change when one feels stuck by talking about problems. This type of therapy is Solution Focused and often short term. Debra teaches clients Self Hypnosis tools that enable them to develop their own practices of healing. In Debra’s words: “I believe that it takes a great deal of courage to come to therapy. Change is ALWAYS POSSIBLE! I will join you on your CHANGE journey and show up to be completely present for you as you learn to access your own potential. I consider therapy a sacred space that I feel grateful to share with you”.
